According to information announced by Time Warner on May 28, 2009, the Board of Directors of Time Warner, Inc has authorized management to proceed with plans for the complete legal and structural separation of AOL from Time Warner.

That separation is effective as of December 9, 2009, when aol. became the company name.

Settlement Agreement July 11, 2007

A multi-state Settlement Agreement was announced between AOL and 48 states, as well as the District of Columbia. The Agreement requires the company to modify its service cancellation procedures and to provide refunds to consumers who complain of unauthorized charges. Cancellation can be posted on the web site http://cancel.aol.com now, in addition to the previously used telephone system. The company agreed to cooperate with the states in resolving complaints and addressing unauthorized charges issues. Consumers can contact their State Attorney General's Office for details. The company also agreed to reimburse the various states and the District of Columbia a total of $3 million dollars. The company states it entered into the Agreement for settlement purposes only.

The company also markets services through a trade name of Walmart Direct. This report includes Bureau experience with that trade style.

Aol has indicated that it offers a free month's service to customers who call to notify the company they wish to cancel service. Customers who accept the offer need to notify the company within the given time frame should they still wish to cancel after that month's service. Consumers should check with their telephone service provider to determine if Aol access numbers are billed as local or long distance numbers for the user. The company referred some complaints to its business partners which marketed goods and services through their on-line listing.
