Subsidy book publishing, music promotions and biography schemes have been termed "Vanity Publishing"; although vanity, as such, may not be the reason or motivation for utilizing the services of a vanity publisher. BBB advises careful reading of the contract for specific details of services to be performed. Although such firms may fulfill the terms of the contract, their efforts on behalf of authors to produce a commercially profitable product are not necessarily successful.
Conventional book publishers make no such promises. A conventional book publisher decides to risk its own money to have a book published and promoted; vanity publishers require the author to underwrite either a partial or total amount of the cost of publishing and promoting the book. Persons who deal with vanity book publishers should recognize that their book may have little or no commercial possibilities, and should expect no more than self-satisfaction from seeing their book in print. Song promoters are sometimes similar in operation. For a fee, they will write music or lyrics to go with poems or melodies solicited from amateurs, and offer to promote the song with a vocal and musical audition tape. All fees are to be paid by the author. There is no guarantee that the song will be commercially successful.
Biographical directories are another type of vanity publication. Various publishers solicit the biographies of persons for inclusion in directories, which may bear prestigious sounding titles. The solicitation is typically accompanied by a request for a fee, or for an order of one or more copies of the projected directory. There is no guarantee that the advertised directories will be or are widely distributed except to those who purchase copies for themselves. The appeal may be based strictly on personal vanity.
Pofessional and business directories may be checked with trade associations for their opinions. Your local public library will stock well-known and useful general biographical directories and may be able to advise you about its knowledge of the volume in question. For student directories, check with your local school. Ask questions. A reputable publisher will be willing to tell who subscribes to its publication and the number of volumes published in past years. For students, keep in mind that listing your name will not guarantee college acceptance, nor will it ensure financial aid for you to attend college.
