When considering a career in modeling, you should be on the lookout for companies that attempt to make money by cashing in on your dream. The Better Business Bureau warns prospective models and parents who feel their small child could be a model to the following business practices. * Be wary of companies advertising in the classified section of the newspaper who claim they are searching for models with no experience necessary. In most cases, you will be asked to attend an interview and "screening" process. Upon completion of the interview, you may find out that there are many costs involved in the company's program, and they are not actually hiring models at all. * When considering becoming involved with a company, find out exactly what it is they are going to do for you. Is the company a modeling agency, similar to an employment agency in that they actually represent you and call you to go out on jobs? Or is the company only offering specific services they are asking you to pay for, such as inclusion of your picture in a directory to be distributed to modeling agencies; attendance at a convention where you may meet representatives of modeling agencies; or portfolios done by the company's own photographer; or classes in makeup, clothing, etc. * Be sure you understand exactly what you are getting for your money if you decide to pay for the company's services. Read and understand the terms of any agreement before signing. Watch for the following "red flags" which may signal a scam: 1. Pressures you for an immediate decision to give money/deposit 2. Avoids answering your specific questions 3. Refuses to give you references 4. Requires you to have pictures taken by a specific photographer 5. Require you to pay to take their classes before they will work with you.
